Winner Trivia

George Winner, the Senator still hot on Eliot Spitzer's trail for Troopergate was the last lawyer admitted to New York's Bar without going to law school.

Winner did it the really old-fashioned way, clerking in a law office.

Don't visions of an old movie come to mind? Modest local boy who clerked in old Mr. Haseltine's office taking on the city slickers from back east. Or is it the courthouse insider protecting the local vigilantes led by Sheriff Bruno?

I'm from the Albany area originally, but I live in Vermont now. Becoming an attorney by reading the law rather than attending law school is still permitted here. In fact, Marilyn Skoglund, a current Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court, studied this way before she was admitted to the bar. http://www.csmonitor.com/2003/0603/p13s01-lecs.html.
