Leftover Campaign Funds

Sunday's Times-Union had a story on leftover campaign funds and what former candidates do with them. They even wrote about the still active funds of former candidates who have died, Ron Stafford for example. Probably fair to say they won't run again. Vote perhaps, but not run.

After a specified time or the candidate's death, why doesn't the State treat such funds as abandoned, like abandoned bank accounts? The State could take the funds unless candidates prove they're still alive and running again. Use them instead of tax money.

When candidates switch parties, all their funds should be treated as abandoned as well.

Hey--great stuff! Followed the link and you missed the transfers!

There's another 300,000 to 400,000 there in the Schedule G Transfers In.

The 508,000 is what the State Party goofs spent on the mercurial Mr. Conners.
