Probably best known for his book, The Best and Brightest, David Halberstam wrote well and with great insight. He died yesterday shortly after an extended conversation on the similarities between the wars in Viet-Nam and Iraq.
Much more obscure, but equally well written was a sports story, The Amateurs: the Story of Four Young Men and their quest for an Olympic Gold Medal.
His reporting from Viet-Nam helped reveal how poorly that war was going despite the official reports that said otherwise. He was a tough reporter, not afraid to call a lie a lie and not afraid to call a lier a lier.
But it all served his readers, including me, offering great prose and great insight.
